9 Divisions
- Open Kindergartner thru 6th Grade
- This Division is open to any child from anywhere - no qualification needed. Cars must have been constructed this year. Must be Child’s design. Construction to take place with adults help for obvious reasons. If a car or group of cars is proven to be purchased or adult built it will be allowed to race, but will not qualify for and will be stripped of awards and records..
- Open 7th & 8th Grade
- This Division is open to any junior high student from anywhere - no qualification needed. Cars must have been constructed this year. Cars competing for The Junior High Nationals - Students must design and construct their own cars with instruction and minimum assistance from their shop instructor or proficient adult. If a car or group of cars is proven to be purchased or adult built it will be allowed to race, but will not qualify for the Junior High National Championship and will be striped of awards and records
- Open High School
- This Division is open to any high school student from anywhere - no qualification needed. Cars must have been constructed this year. Cars competing for The High School Nationals - Students must design and construct their own cars with instruction and minimum assistance from their shop instructor or proficient adult. If a car or group of cars is proven to be purchased or adult built it will be allowed to race, but will not qualify for the High School National Championship and will be striped of awards and records
- Open Adults
- Open to High School students and Adults from anywhere.
- 3D Printed Cars - This class is designed to show off your 3D printing design and building skills. See 3D Printed Cars Rules for Details.
- Big Rig - as a special part of our event race your pinewood derby Truck & Trailer
- Big Rig B - as a special part of our event race your pinewood derby Truck
- Vintage 1953 Class
- Demolition Derby

II - Body Specifications
- Width – not to exceed 2 ¾ inches (7cm)
- Length – not to exceed 7 inches (17.8cm)
- Height – must have clearance under Finishing Gate – not to exceed 6 ½ inches
- Weight – not to exceed 5.0 ounces – 143.4 grams measured on Official Race Scale
- Overweight cars may be reduced to 5.0 ounces (143.4grams) or below before they can officially be entered, at the Race Day Check in.
- Center Rail Clearance – Cars must clear the center rail which is 1 5/8 inches wide by ¼ inch tall along the entire length of the car.
- Wheelbase –Can be extended. Standard wheelbase is 4 3/8 inches from center of front axle to center of back axle. Any wheelbase can be used. Wheels must be directly across from one another.
- Axle holes may be drilled into body of car as long as the specs are met.
- The main body structure must be made of wood
- Body design may be enhanced by adding other stable materials such as plastic, metal or details. All additions must be firmly attached and conform to size specifications. No loose materials will be allowed on the cars.
- No part of the car’s body, wheels, or attachments can extend beyond the starting peg on the track what so ever. Additionally the wheels may not extend beyond the rear of the car or past the front of the car – the length is not to exceed 7 inches.
III – Prohibited Items that can NOT be used
- Magnets, springs or suspension systems of any type.
- Starting devices, finish line devices, propellants, or propulsion systems
- Wet paint, or Sticky substances
- Glass or excessively fragile parts
- Electronic or lighting devices (if lights are on the car they must be turned off)
- Bearings
- No use of Guide Pins or such devices
- Axles and wheels attached to any device that mechanically alters rotation or spin.
IV – Wheels
- Only Official BSA Wheels are allowed (either new style & old style) all markings must be intact on inside and outside of wheel. You may use the Official BSA Colored wheels, fluting around the circumference of the wheel may be removed - all other marking must remain.
- Outer wheel surface may be sanded, shaved, lathed or polished to remove any imperfections, true roundness, remove mold castings and burrs, but must not be reshaped in any way to minimize tread contact or alter aerodynamics.
- The tread / contact surface must remain flat and parallel to the bore.
- The width of the tread must not be less than 7.5mm
- No removing or reducing the letters or spokes or drilling additional holes.
- The following wheel modifications are NOT Allowed
- No Rounding of the wheel treads – they must remain flat.
- No Grooving, H-cutting, V-cutting, Crowing, Tapering or Dishing
- No Altering the wheel profile
- No Drilling sidewalls
- No Filling of any wheel surface with any type of material
- Officials will remove wheel(s) if lettering is not completely visible
- Coning the hubs, truing the inside edge of the wheel, and removing the outer hub step down is allowed.
- Wheel Bore treatment is allowed including polishing, sanding and / or tapping.
- Wheel bores may not be filled and re-drilled
- There must be at least four wheels on the car, however it is not required that all four wheels make contact with the track surface – one wheel may be lifted from the track surface.
- Each wheel must be mounted on an axle, on the outside of the car, on the side of the car.
- Wheels may not be greater than 10 degree of an angle from the body of the car
- Each wheel must be attached by an axle - no guide pins allowed
- Wheels must be installed directly across from one another
- Wheels may NOT be reversed - wheels must be run in standard position
- Non-Dominant / Lifted wheels must meet wheel specifications
V – Axles
- Nail type axles but not limited to those found in the Official BSA kit are to be used.
- Modifications to the Axles are allowed that include straightening, sanding, polishing, canting, grooving, beveling & tapering of axle head as long as the Diameter of the Axle is not reduced the Diameter may not be less than .084 inches (2.13mm).
- Axles can be mounted by drilling Axle holes or inserted into the slots on car.
VI – Lubrication
- Approved lubricants include (but are not limited to) Graphite, Teflon, Nyoil, Krytox
- No excess oil outside the bore. If a car appears to have lubrication leaking out of the bores it will not be allowed to race.
- Officials will remove wheels if in question.
VII – Race Operations and Miscellaneous Rules
- All Cars MUST pass inspection before being allowed to race based on the rules and specification stated in I. through VI.
- An approved inspected car will then be checked in and not be touched by anyone but the race officials. Until the cars are released by Race Officials.
- All lubrication of wheels must take place prior to final inspection check in and before Final Race (see below)
- Officials have the Right to Disqualify Any Car, which does not meet all of the stated rules and specifications. The Officials Decision is Final.
- Appealing a decision – if a Race Official makes a ruling and you wish to appeal it – all Officials will be assembled and based on majority rule the decision will be upheld or overturned.
- Each car will race once in every lane (4 times on 4 lane track)
- Each race is timed with electronic equipment.
- In the event the equipment fails, the race(s) will be re-run.
- The slowest time will be dropped and the average of the remaining 3 times (on 4 lane track) will determine the results for each racer – Composite Time
- In the event of a tie(s) a run-off will be run between any of the cars needed to fill the 8 slots for the finals race for each Division using the same method of running once in each lane and taking the average of the fastest 5 times.
- 8 Fastest Cars in each Division will advance to Finals Race
- Each Division Finals run separately
- Trophies will be award to 1st thru 3rd
- Finals - Prior to the “Finals” "Finalist cars will be allowed to be “re-lubricated” – at the Official Race Table Only – under the supervision of the Race Officials. No other modifications will be allowed, except spinning of the wheels to work the lube in and cleaning lube from car and wheels. This only applies to the Graphite Divisions
- Final Races awards will be based on the average times in this Final Race – dropping the slowest time – composite time.
- In the Event of a Tie a run-off as described above will be run
- Additional Trophies
- Perpetual Trophy will be etched with winning High School shop, Winning Junior High shop and the winner of each class.
- Entries will be eligible to win design awards in the following categories (voted on by the students present) - one award per car:
- Best Workmanship
- Best Paint Job
- Most Patriotic
- Most Creative
- Most Aerodynamic
- Best Overall Design
- Most Realistic Looking
- Best of Show - Trophies will be awarded to each of the following Divisions:
- Junior High / High School / Adult / Big Rig Division / Vintage 1953 / Classic 80's / Old School
- Best of Show Awards will be voted on by a select panel of Judges
- During Races
- If a car jumps the track and interferes with another car then the race will automatically have to be re-run.
- If the same car jumps the track again, then it is disqualified (after interfering)
- If a car jumps the track and does not interfere with another car, and finishes the race it will not be re-run.
- If a car jumps the track and does not interfere with another car, but does not cross the finish line a time of 9.9999 seconds will be assigned to that car’s race.
- If an item affixed to a car falls off during a race, and in the opinion of the race official the car is still able to race, repairs will not be allowed.
- If a car suffers a mechanical failure or is unable to finish, the individual will be allowed 3 minutes to make the repair under the supervision of a race official. No weight can be added to the car as part of the repair action. If the car is unfit to race after the 3 minute period, or becomes disabled after further racing, it will be disqualified and taken out of the race. No other modifications are allowed – such as re-lubing, only the repair to the item(s) can be preformed.
- Any car that is discovered to be illegal during the competition by a Race Official will be disqualified from competition.
3D Printed Cars

Rules are exactly the same as above with the following exceptions:
The main body structure must be a 3D printed car you design.
The only part of the car that can be wood is the two axle spars (maximum .25"X1.75"X.25" each).
Racers must design and construct their own cars. If a car or group of cars is proven to be purchased or designed and/or built by someone else it will be striped of awards and records.

Big Rig Nationals
I - Eligibility / Registration
- This is open to anyone that would like to build a Big Rig / Semi
- Pre-race registration can be completed
- Cost is $5 if attending $10 if Proxy Racing. Race day registration can be done at the event – cost is $10
- You can use a BSA Big Rig Kit or Beta Craft kit
or you can make your own as long as it meets the Body Specifications. Bodies can be made out of Pine, Balsa, Basswood, Aspen, to name just a few any material may be used that does not interfere with the equipment or the other Big Rigs.
- Width - of Cab and Trailer not to exceed 3 3/8 inches
- Length – of Cab is not to exceed 8 ½ inches, minimum length is 7 inches long – of Trailer not to exceed 13 inches, minimum length is 10 inches long ** Maximum Length of Cab and Trailer when combined not to exceed 19 inches
- Height – Must have clearance under Finishing Gate – not to exceed 6 ½ inches, Minimum height requirement of 3 inches
- Center Rail Clearance – Big Rigs must clear the center rail which is 1 5/8 inches wide by ¼ inch tall along the entire length of the vehicle.
- Weight – The Cab is not to exceed 9.0 ounces – 256.5 grams measured on Official Race Scale – The Trailer is not to exceed 16.0 ounces – 455 grams measured on Official Race Scale -- The combined Cab & Trailer is not to exceed 25.0 ounces – 711.5 grams measured on Official Race Scale
- Body Design – may be enhanced by adding other stable materials such as plastic, metal, or details. All additions must be firmly attached and conform to size specifications. No loose materials will be allowed.
- Trailer Pin – is to be used in connecting Cab to Trailer. Trailer must detach from Cab as both will be weighted separately. You can use any material that you would like for the Pin. Pin must be secure enough to not separate from Cab during race.
- No Part of the Big Rig can extend beyond the starting peg on the track what so ever.
- No magnets, springs, propellants, or propulsion system, no wet paint or sticky substances, no glass or excessively fragile parts, electronic or lighting devices must be turned off during race, No bearings, or any device that mechanically alters the rotation or the spin of the wheels.
- Only Official BSA Wheels are allowed (either new style & old style) all markings must be intact on inside and outside of wheel. You may use the Official BSA Colored wheels

- Cab – Must have 10 Wheels – two front wheels – across and parallel to each other and 4 dual wheel (two per axle) in the rear of cab. Wheels may not be staggered.
- Trailer - Must have 8 Wheels – 4 dual wheel (two per axle) towards the rear of the trailer
- All Wheels do not have to touch

V - Axles
- Any Nail Type Axle may be used – modifications to the Axles are allowed, including grooving, canting, beveling, tapering of axle head as long as the Diameter of the Axle is not reduced less than 0.84 inches. There must be 8 Long Dual Axles and 2 single wheel axles. Axles must have Nail Type head –bushings, spacers, and / or washers can be used
- Approved lubricants include (but are not limited to) Graphite, Teflon, Nyoil, Krytox
- All Big Rigs MUST pass inspection before being allowed to race based on the rules stated in I. through VI.
- An approved inspected Big Rig will then be checked in and not be touched by anyone but the race officials. Until the Big Rigs are released by Race Officials.

Big Rig "B-Class" Nationals
I - Eligibility / Registration
- This is open to anyone that would like to build a Big Rig
- Pre-race registration can be completed
- Cost is $5 if attending $10 if Proxy Racing. Race day registration can be done at the event – cost is $10
- You can use any type of Kit or you can make your own as long as it meets the Body Specifications. Bodies can be made out of Pine, Balsa, Basswood, Aspen, to name just a few any material may be used that does not interfere with the equipment or the other Big Rigs
- Width - Not to exceed 3 3/8 inches
- Length – Minimum length is 17 inches long ** Maximum Length of not to exceed 19 inches
- Height – Must have clearance under Finishing Gate – not to exceed 6 ½ inches, Minimum height requirement of 3 inches
- Center Rail Clearance – Big Rigs must clear the center rail which is 1 5/8 inches wide by ¼ inch tall along the entire length of the vehicle.
- Weight – The overall weight is not to exceed 25.0 ounces – 711.5 grams measured on Official Race Scale
- Body Design – may be enhanced by adding other stable materials such as plastic, metal, or details. All additions must be firmly attached and conform to size specifications. No loose materials will be allowed.
- No Part of the Big Rig can extend beyond the starting peg on the track what so ever.

Vintage 1953
I - Body Specifications
- Width – not to exceed 2 ¾ inches (7cm) Minimum width of 1 3/8"(as pictured above) must be met at cockpit area in front of the rear spar.
- Length – not to exceed 7 3/8 inches
- Height – must have clearance under Finishing Gate – not to exceed 6 ½ inches. Minimum Height (as pictured above) must be 1" bottom of car to top of nose. Minimum Height (as pictured above) must be 1 3/4" bottom of car to top of car just in front of the rear spar.
- Weight – not to exceed 5.0 ounces – 141.7 grams measured on Official Race Scale
- Overweight cars may be reduced to 5.0 ounces (141.7 grams) or below before they can officially be entered, at the Race Day Check in.
- Center Rail Clearance – Cars must clear the center rail which is 1 5/8 inches wide by ¼ inch tall along the entire length of the car.
- Wheelbase – Wheelbase is 5 1/4 inches from center of front axle to center of back axle. Wheels must be directly across from one another.
- Axle holes may be drilled into body of car as long as the specs are met.
- The main body structure must be made from an Original Kit. If you do not have access to one you must follow the original specifications in the picture/design including the separate (glued on) axle spars.
- Body design may be enhanced by adding other stable materials such as plastic, metal or details. All additions must be firmly attached and conform to size specifications. No loose materials will be allowed on the cars.
- Only front wheels can extend beyond the starting peg on the track.
- Magnets, springs or suspension systems of any type.
- Starting devices, finish line devices, propellants, or propulsion systems
- Wet paint, or Sticky substances
- Glass or excessively fragile parts
- Electronic or lighting devices (if lights are on the car they must be turned off)
- Bearings (except in Pro-Bearing Division)

- No removing spokes or drilling additional holes.
- The following wheel modifications are NOT Allowed
- No Rounding of the wheel treads – they must remain original shape.
- No Altering the wheel profile
- No Drilling sidewalls
- No Filling of any wheel surface with any type of material
- Officials will remove wheel(s) if anything is questionable.
- Coning the hubs, truing the inside edge of the wheel is allowed.
- Wheel Bore treatment is allowed including polishing, sanding and / or tapping.
- Wheel bores may not be filled and re-drilled
- There must be at least four wheels on the car, however it is not required that all four wheels make contact with the track surface – one wheel may be lifted from the track surface.
- Each wheel must be mounted on an axle, on the outside of the car, on the side of the car.
- Wheels may not be greater than 10 degree of an angle from the body of the car
- Each wheel must be attached by an axle - no guide pins allowed
- Wheels must be installed directly across from one another
- Wheels must be run in standard position
- Non-Dominant / Lifted wheels must meet wheel specifications
IV – Axles
- Drywall Nail type axles as found in the Original Official BSA kit are to be used.
- Pre Modification these axles measure:
- Head: 0.30 inches – Must remain original OD
Length – 1.10 inches
Diameter .093 (Diameter may not be less than .084 inches) - Modifications to the Axles are allowed that include straightening, sanding, polishing, canting, grooving, beveling & tapering of axle head is allowed.
- Axles can be mounted by drilling Axle holes or inserted into the original slots.
- GRAPHITE ONLY – NO EXCEPTIONS
- Officials will remove wheels if in question !!!
VI – Race Operations and Miscellaneous Rules
- All Cars MUST pass inspection before being allowed to race based on the rules and specification stated in I. through VI.
- An approved inspected car will then be checked in and not be touched by anyone but the race officials. Until the cars are released by Race Officials.
- All lubrication of wheels must take place prior to final inspection check in and before Final Race (see below)
- Officials have the Right to Disqualify Any Car, which does not meet all of the stated rules and specifications. The Officials Decision is Final.
- Appealing a decision – if a Race Official makes a ruling and you wish to appeal it – all Officials will be assembled and based on majority rule the decision will be upheld or overturned.
- Each car will race once in every lane (4 times on 4 lane track)
- Each race is timed with electronic equipment.
- In the event the equipment fails, the race(s) will be re-run.
- The slowest time will be dropped and the average of the remaining 3 times (on 4 lane track) will determine the results for each racer – Composite Time
- In the event of a tie(s) a run-off will be run between any of the cars needed to fill the 8 slots for the finals race for each Division using the same method of running once in each lane and taking the average of the fastest 5 times.
- 8 Fastest Cars in each Division will advance to Finals Race
- Each Division Finals run separately
- Trophies will be award to 1st thru 3rd
- Finals - Prior to the “Finals” "Finalist cars will be allowed to be “re-lubricated” – at the Official Race Table Only – under the supervision of the Race Officials. No other modifications will be allowed, except spinning of the wheels to work the lube in and cleaning lube from car and wheels. This only applies to the Graphite Divisions
- Final Races awards will be based on the average times in this Final Race – dropping the slowest time – composite time.
- In the Event of a Tie a run-off as described above will be run.

II - Body Specifications
III – Prohibited Items that can NOT be used
- Width – not to exceed 2 ¾ inches (7cm)
- Length – not to exceed 7 inches (17.8cm)
- Height – must have clearance under Finishing Gate – not to exceed 6 ½ inches
- Weight – not to exceed 5.0 ounces – 143.4 grams measured on Official Race Scale
- Overweight cars may be reduced to 5.0 ounces (143.4grams) or below before they can officially be entered, at the Race Day Check in.
- Center Rail Clearance – Cars must clear the center rail which is 1 5/8 inches wide by ¼ inch tall along the entire length of the car.
- Wheelbase –Can be extended. Standard wheelbase is 4 3/8 inches from center of front axle to center of back axle. Any wheelbase can be used. Wheels must be directly across from one another.
- Axle holes may be drilled into body of car as long as the specs are met.
- The main body structure must be made of wood
- Body design may be enhanced by adding other stable materials such as plastic, metal or details. All additions must be firmly attached and conform to size specifications. No loose materials will be allowed on the cars.
- No part of the car’s body, wheels, or attachments can extend beyond the starting peg on the track what so ever. Additionally the wheels may not extend beyond the rear of the car or past the front of the car – the length is not to exceed 7 inches.
III – Prohibited Items that can NOT be used
- Razor Blades or other items that could injure staff or attendees.
- Magnets, springs or suspension systems of any type.
- Starting devices, finish line devices, propellants, or propulsion systems
- Wet paint, or Sticky substances
- Glass or excessively fragile parts
- Electronic or lighting devices (if lights are on the car they must be turned off)
- Bearings
- No use of Guide Pins or such devices
- Axles and wheels attached to any device that mechanically alters rotation or spin.
- Only Official BSA Wheels are allowed (either new style & old style) all markings must be intact on inside and outside of wheel. You may use the Official BSA Colored wheels, fluting around the circumference of the wheel may be removed - all other marking must remain.
- Outer wheel surface may be sanded, shaved, lathed or polished to remove any imperfections, true roundness, remove mold castings and burrs, but must not be reshaped in any way to minimize tread contact or alter aerodynamics.
- The tread / contact surface must remain flat and parallel to the bore.
- The width of the tread must not be less than 7.5mm
- No removing or reducing the letters or spokes or drilling additional holes.

- Nail type axles but not limited to those found in the Official BSA kit are to be used.
- Modifications to the Axles are allowed that include straightening, sanding, polishing, canting, grooving, beveling & tapering of axle head as long as the Diameter of the Axle is not reduced the Diameter may not be less than .084 inches (2.13mm).
- Axles can be mounted by drilling Axle holes or inserted into the slots on car.
- Approved lubricants include (but are not limited to) Graphite, Teflon, Nyoil, Krytox
- No excess oil outside the bore. If a car appears to have lubrication leaking out of the bores it will not be allowed to race.
- Officials will remove wheels if in question.
- All Cars MUST pass inspection before being allowed to race based on the rules and specification stated in I. through VI.
- An approved inspected car will then be checked in and not be touched by anyone but the race officials. Until the cars are released by Race Officials.
- All lubrication of wheels must take place prior to final inspection check in and before Final Race (see below)

- Ramp selection and order will be determined by random drawing. Numbers will be pulled from a hat.
- After each run cars will be inspected to see if they can go again without damaging the ramps. If a car can not go on it's number will be removed from the hat.
- Demolition Derby will continue until there are 4 cars left that are raceable or every car has competed three times on each ramp and is still raceable. At this point the remaining raceable car will be take to the main track and be raced once in each lane to determine the winner.
- During Races
- If a car jumps the track and interferes with another car then the race will automatically have to be re-run.
- If the same car jumps the track again, then it is disqualified (after interfering)
- If a car jumps the track and does not interfere with another car, and finishes the race it will not be re-run.
- If a car jumps the track and does not interfere with another car, but does not cross the finish line a time of 9.9999 seconds will be assigned to that car’s race.
- If an item affixed to a car falls off during a race, and in the opinion of the race official the car is still able to race, repairs will not be allowed.
- If a car suffers a mechanical failure or is unable to finish, repairs will not be allowed. If the car is unfit, or becomes disabled after further racing, it will be disqualified and taken out of the race.
